As a young man in the 1920's, he started off photographing Hungarian peasants around him to show his emotional connection with his subjects he photographed. This then progressed into other types of photography including his still life work.
still life...
The majority of his work consists of photographs that were commissioned by magazines. his work can be split into four periods - Hungarian, Parisian, American and International periods. He started out by taking photographs in his spare time in his early life and the images consisted of gypsies and peasants as that's what he found most interesting at the time. He also took war photos and he also did still life images.
Kertesz's work is very minimalistic and consists of shadows and reflections like the photos above. His work also has been positioned well and he uses the rule of thirds to make his images more interesting as some of his subjects are slightly to the side of the frame rather than in the centre which is more effective to the viewer. The photos above are also quite bright creating tones and shadows in the images.
