CONTEMPORAY SURREALISM....
Marcelo Monreal-
We are made of flowers |
Monreal is a Brazilian collage artist who digitally splits apart model and celebrities faces and he edits flowers and leaves growing from behind the face. He came up with this idea because he thinks that people don't often tell us who they really are, as they keep parts of themselves hidden. He decided with this project to open up peoples faces to show that there is beauty behind everyone's appearance. |
my images...
For these image, I took inspiration from Marcelo Monreal I used Photoshop to cut and relocate a part of the models face and edit flowers beneath their faces to match Monreal's idea of showing there is beauty behind everyone's appearance. For all of the images I used a high key setup for my models.
I took the images into Photoshop and cut away apart of their faces and moved it over slightly, I made the background behind this black. I then copy and pasted flowers I had taken photos of onto new layers over the top of the image but under the segment of their cut away face to give the impression that there are flowers coming from inside their heads. Then I added shadow to the cut out pieces to give a more 3D effect. For the two photos below, I cut away two parts of the models face and I included a colour and black and white version of this as Monreal also created black and white images to make the beauty of the flowers stand out more. |
Christopher Mckenney-
Christopher McKenney is a conceptual artist from Pennsylvania specializing in horror surrealist photography. The surreal photographs by Christopher McKenney are haunting and involve mostly faceless figures in deserted environments. The images are shot in scenes like the woods, fields, lakes, country roads etc.
McKenney was inspired by the work of the Vivian Maier, a street photographer of the '50s and '60s. Some of McKenny's work are a juxtaposition between happy and dark imagery, such him photographing a noose hanging from a colourful bunch of balloons. I like McKenney's style of work because what may look like a completely normal and 'happy' image has hidden meaning or slight surreal aspects. |
I only make the photos I do to express myself and what other people see or think is up to them, as long as I make them feel anything I'm ok with that |
my images...
For these images, inspiration came from Christopher McKenney. I used photoshop to give the effect of a disappearing/appearing person through a frame. To achieve this I took a photo of the background without my models in and then another photo with my models in shot. I then took these into photoshop and rubbed out various parts of one of my models bodies to give more of a surrealist effect.
I feel as both these images are quite basic and I’d like to try and reshoot to maybe make my images more exciting and different.
